      July 23, 2023 at 8:18 am I need to change my transmission oil on my twin Cummins 5.9 engines. I have the quick drain feature.  Questions: What is the capacity for transmission fluid? What type of fluid do I need, is ATF from auto parts store ok? What other items should I be checking, is there a filter/strainer I need to check? Is it easy as it sounds, just drain and refill?       June 19, 2023 at 1:56 pm Hello,  Having an issue, looking for help/direction. Intermittently, when I activate the forward gear, no reaction from transmission. I’ve cleaned the shift solenoid, replaced the coil and wire harness. When the issue occurs, if I tap on the shift valve, it starts working normally for the day.  I am told that I should upgrade the oil to Mobil424. Only happening to the forward direction, voltage is the same on both primary and secondary. 12.93 C…

      July 13, 2023 at 2:20 pm Just replaced the stbd turbo drain line on my 1999 Cummins 6BTA 5.9 M3 330 HP, and while running the engine to check for leaks noticed that I had ATF leaking out from the transmission’s filter cap.  No leaks on the drain line – yippee for that. Quick check of the repair/parts manual had me grab my 6mm Allen wrench and get into a boat yoga position to tighten the cap.  That didn’t help (it was already ‘closed to the stop&#…

      July 11, 2023 at 9:04 pm My 20 year old Tides shaft seals are leaking so I am replacing them.  Probably sticking with Tides although I’ve read all the very compelling arguments around packing glands.  Anyways…. I just want to verify that the shaft nut that holds the coupler on is removed in a counter-clockwise manner when looking at the nut from the end of the shaft, as in the photo.       July 14, 2023 at 1:27 pm Update:  I was able to get both coupler nuts off.  I did give clockwise a try, but got nothing.  So I went back to counter-clockwise (normal thread) and a bigger cheater bar.  While applying a lot of torque and tapping the socket with a hammer they both broke free!!  Now to get those couplers off!!  Thanks again for the suggestions!

      June 24, 2023 at 10:02 am Hi Tony! Last week, my Port side Cummins QSM11 with Twin disc transmission (MG5082 SC) with manual shifters, started to fail. Even with the lever in NEUTRAL, the shaft is rotating as if it was placed in forward but at a lower speed than if engaged to the FWD position, it also generates a little thrust. But also, FYI and feed back for the forum, I checked the oil level again and it was a little low, so I added less that a quart and guess what… The transmission worked just fine.       June 27, 2023 at 7:53 am Suck the gear dry out the bottom drain plug on the gear. Remove the oil lines going the the gear cooler and flush it it too uses #2 diesel and then air to blow it out…  Replace the oil filter with new Let’s SEE how milky the oil is before to do a fresh oil start-up.   Seaboard Founder & President

      June 25, 2023 at 2:11 pm Yes you can suck it out that way, but even easier may be  to put  the oil pressure line that exits the pump into an appropriate container and start the engine.. The oil will all pump out until the pump sucks the transmissiom sump dry or sucks air and looses prime.. No ISSUE doing this ..     Seaboard Founder & President

      June 8, 2023 at 11:45 am No problem, thought maybe it was a typo we needed to fix.  The input “top hose” going into the pump, drip it full of oil and bump the engine a few times.  Might need to pull the solenoid wire for a no-start. Rob "Luck is the residue of good design."

      May 25, 2023 at 2:10 pm I believe I have a leaking output seal on both of my ZF220 gears.  Maybe leaking elsewhere as well on the port side – hard to tell.  The port side is leaking much more, only a few drops on the stbd side.  This has been an ongoing issue since I purchased the boat last year.  I guess marine age is the culprit?  We changed the gear oil on both sides a few months back.  Old gear oil was still golden in color and looked clean.       May 23, 2023 at 4:45 am Yes, SAE30 and 3 liters is the listed capacity.  I always check the level before draining and then measure what is removed and use that as a refill reference and then adjust slightly if needed.  See the attached documents for some additional info and diagram.  As to cleaning the screen, I wipe it clean, blow it out and then flush with new oil.  You can use something like mineral spirits if you feel the need but always finish your rinsing/cleanin…

      August 16, 2017 at 6:47 pm Have a ZF 280A with trolling valve that is operated by the standard t handle push pull cable. I do salmon trolling on Lake Michigan with the boat which is a 36 Tiara with C series Cummins. I can dead stop the boat with the control and get to about 1.8 knots easy with it, but no matter how easy or patient I am with the cable/control I can´t get much more speed out of it without it making a gear grinding noise or jumping out of troll mode.       March 25, 2023 at 7:25 am Post a good pic of the gear, the gauge you are using and the location on the gear where you are measuring pressure.   If the tag says “hurth” , this gear could easily be pushing 30 years old   If you were not measuring pressure, was there some type of symptom you were looking into?  Was the PSI ever at spec?  History of the gear?
