ZF IRM 220A oil filter housing bracket snapped
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 11, 2023 at 7:28 pm This bracket snapped like a twig. Should have never tried it, but wanted to clean the screen… oh well Can you still buy this bracket? Can it be welded? Can I take the pump off via the 4 bolts? That would allow better access… Any pointers are much appreciated!!! Nik in San Diego
1 ReplyMarch 18, 2023 at 10:27 am Plenty about this posted in Tony’s Tips to “warn about this issue” Anyway, you are not is good shape at all as if you can find a part, you are very lucky. Maybe off a used gear. Harbor Diesel ( Mike Vogt) in Washington may have something? Take it all apart and then take good pics, Send them to me.. “weld-able” very a big maybe  Tony Seaboard Founder & President

Torsion coupling install
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 2, 2023 at 5:12 pm Searched a bunch but still need some advice. I purchased new Centa CF-r torsional coupling for a 280 1a gear from here. Went to install but the instructions that came with the coupling were pretty confusing.  Seems like the directions are starting as if the coupling is disassembled? pics included Mine came in one piece but there was some washers and a strap in a bag? Washers i get but not sure about the strap? Must be for assembly? Also not…
4 RepliesMarch 7, 2023 at 5:53 am Your particular CFR coupling would have come fully assembled and ready to install–Ignore the “instructions and strap”.. Washers are used on the attachment bolts. Lube all with at lease a full tablespoon on common lithium grease inside the spline cavity and on the male spline too (which needs a “O” ring on it to keep the grese in the spline.. Twin Disc 506(?) delayed oil pressure and shifting
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
January 9, 2023 at 12:11 am I have a Twin Disc that I believe to be a MG-506(-1?), original equipment on a Cat 3208T circa 1982-83. OEM trolling valve was added by previous owner It worked just fine. and then there was a (possibly related) starting fluid high rev event. Now the transmission takes about 15 seconds to build pressure and shift the first time you engage it in either direction. If it’s been in gear and you go neutral and back into either gear, it will co…
2 RepliesJanuary 20, 2023 at 12:42 pm Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve tested shifting on the unit by moving the selector valve arm fully to the detents, and still the same result. I need to do the same with the trolling valve arm, even though the helm control is fully disengaged. I had a phone conversation with Twin Disc corporate, and was told that based on the symptoms and the model/vintage, it was most likely the clutch piston seals starting to go, and I should contact one …

PSS Shaft Seal Cooling Line Connection – Cummins 6BT
This topic has 4 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
January 16, 2023 at 8:02 am I have a single engine Cummins 6BT 5.9M 220 hp Trawler (new to me boat) that has a cooling line running from the gear cooler raw water drain hole to the PSS shaft seal. Iâm not happy with the connection since it is below the water line and only has room for one small clamp on the clear vinyl hose. As far as I know the boat has operated like that for awhile. questions: Is having a cooling line a good idea? PSS says that the shaft seal only needs …

Torsional Coupling

January 13, 2023 at 3:35 pm Iâm in the middle of installing new long blocks, and when separating the gears from the engines I found my boat currently has Centra CF-FS-30 couplings (SAE 11.5â). The boat is powered by 6BTA 370 engines and has ZF200A gears (1.75 ratio). Â Is there a direct replacement to the centra that is recommended that would require any other modifications? Â The current couplings are 23 years old now and have 1700 hours on them so while everything is apart…
2 RepliesJanuary 13, 2023 at 5:36 pm Thank you, I was concerned with the description that says not for cummins engines. Â Is there any specific reason to be afraid to use these? Â Itâs recreational use, less than 200 hrs per year. Â

January 4, 2023 at 11:23 pm Hi, I have ZF 80 transmissions in my boat with 370 6BTA engies, the port side seems to run at a high pressure o the gauge. What woould be thepossible issue causing this? Also do you sell the dripless shaft seal mainteace kits, 1 3/4″ Shaft – 3″Log. Cheers James
5 RepliesJanuary 8, 2023 at 3:43 pm Hi Tony, No issues, it’s just that time to change the bellows, is that kit available on your website? I like to have a clean engine room, to show if any issues arise, they are identified easily. Cheers JamesÂ

December 24, 2022 at 7:33 am Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me with a gearbox issue. I have a Princess 368, 1992, running with 2 x 6BTA5.9M2 300hp and I have recently (June 2022) replaced both my ZF220A gearboxes. The original gearboxes were IRM Â 220A 1:1.533 (Red info plates) and the new ones are ZF220A 1:1.533 (Blue info plates). Old and new gearboxes identical apart from the info plates. TWIN DISC PRESSURES AND DARK FLUID

February 27, 2018 at 6:54 pm Ever since the new engines (QSB6.7) and trans package MG5065SC was installed. The port has a 15 psi lower pressure at idle than the starboard but that changes when you are in gear and the port is about 50 psi higher at full throttle. Twin Disc (Awful customer service) was never able to tell me why and thought perhaps the numbers are bogus. They are both hooked up the same. All the readings on the vessel view are very close or the same for ev…

Which Transmission Oil Filter??? – ZF286A
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
December 12, 2022 at 9:24 am ZF says to use part # 3213-308-019. SBMAR has Cummins part LF701 listed, but only for transmissions with the MB30 valve, which I donât believe I have because Iâm using electronic throttles. Previous owner had been using Cummins HF6531. Attached are pics, which filter do I use??? Thanks everyone! Â Â
1 ReplyDecember 12, 2022 at 6:19 pm MB 30/31 / EB 30/31 –Same oil filter      Only difference between the LF701 and what you have (LF6531)is the total capacity/volume…….. Makes no real difference in your application–Or spend 5X the $$ and buy the ZF filter ( just rebranded w/ a ZF $$) . BTW, your valve is really a EB31 Seaboard Founder & President

December 6, 2022 at 9:18 am Can a ZF 80A transmission be replaced with a ZF 85A directly or with minor modifications? This is for a 2007 Meridian 341 with a trashed ZF 80A (1.96:1 ratio) coupled to Cummins QSB 5.9 rated at 330HP. Thanks, Jim McMillen 954-646-3640

Torsional Coupling Replacement
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
November 23, 2022 at 4:06 pm Iâm planning to replace the torsional coupling on one of my engines. The drive train has a lot of gear chatter at idle and I doubt these have ever been replaced before so this is going to be my winter project while the boat is on the hard. Since the coupling is neither engine nor transmission, it seems there is limited technical information on replacement, although I see previous mention that it is âmechanics 101â. For the novice like me, I wa…
3 RepliesNovember 23, 2022 at 8:26 pm I believe the idle speed on that engine is somewhere around 600-700. The other engine seems to be set lower so I do hear the power pulse Clark is discussing on that engine.  The engines are 1989 vintage but only have around 1500 hours on them. This particular engine had a slight mis-alignment issue for a number of years due to a cracked engine mount bolt (bolt going through the stringer) that was difficult to find. It was there when I bought …

ZF 280 A1 Electronic Trolling Valves – Adjustment?

August 24, 2022 at 10:04 pm I have twin Cummins QSB 5.9s with ZF 280 A1 transmissions. Recently had electronic trolling valves installed. My dealer is very inexperienced with these and is somewhat stumped with the issue we are having. The trolling valves seem to work fine at the dock and when the engines are cold. After a quick cruise, however, the trolling valves will not engage. The lights on the solenoids and the controls all seem to be working correctly.  Sometim…

Meridian 411 – QSB 380 HO – ZF 85A
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
November 9, 2022 at 2:27 pm I am lookin for suggestions. My friend purchased a 2007 Meridian 411 with Cummins QSB 380 HP HO engines. It originally came with ZF 80 gears with a 2.0:1 ratio. The transmissions were upgraded due to an issue with the coupler which caused torsional vibration. The new gears were a ZF-85A. The boat topped out at 30 knots at 3100 RPMs. Last year he had a situation where the starboard prop hit bottom. The props were sent out for reconditionin…
5 RepliesNovember 10, 2022 at 8:23 pm Very observant! The original survey I have from 2016 was in knots. 30 knots at WOT. I have a hard time believing that it could possibly hit 30 knots. The new speed is in MPH. Took it out again today and tried to check the propeller shaft RPMs at WOT. Was unsuccessful. the tachometer wasn’t working properly. We will try again in a couple days.

ZF220A hp capacity?

November 3, 2022 at 8:20 am Can you tell me the maximum HP the ZF220A can handle when paired with the Cummins QSB5.9? recreational usage.
