I have a 65 Hatteras convertible that has CAT 3412E and BW196 transmissions with Sturdy Electronic Controls including trolling valves.
The engines have 1600 hours on them, of which I put on 400 easy hours over the last 2 years. I have recently noticed a slower engagement on the port engine going into forward. The Clutch pressure is normal at idle, 135 psi, and over 700 rpm at 310psi. Reverse is exactly normal quickly jumping to 300 psi even at 550 rpm (slow vessel mode). The shift to fwd is becoming increasingly delayed and I observe Clutch pressure dropping to 90 psi and slowly building back to 125 psi at which time we get full engagement. Pressure builds with rpm, not time, until everything is normal by 700 rpm. The oil is still clear and no unusual smell.
I have swapped complete control heads from Port to Starboard and the problem remained with the port engine. I pulled the covers for both the input and reversing shaft and checked the piston rings and bores and they were pristine and still had preload. I assume at this point that I have either a worn out clutch or the seals on the clutch piston are shot. What is anyone’s experience with these symptoms. If I have to pull the gears off to get to the seals is it recommended to replace the clutch packs, given the difficulty and special tools required to get there? Any suggestions on who has tools for this in the San Diego area?
